  • About

Established in 2005, the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) is committed to protecting, promoting, and enhancing the 51.7-mile Virginia Capital Trail, a paved, shared-use path that inspires people to enjoy the outdoors, connect with nature, and embrace the communities, history, and landscapes along its route. More than a trail, it’s where neighbors walk, run, and cycle, families discover and learn outdoors, and residents and visitors can travel safely and actively while enjoying the region’s rich heritage and scenic beauty.

With over one million annual usage counts, the Trail offers access to local businesses, historic sites, and outdoor recreation, while serving as a local economic driver for tourism and community engagement. Committed to the stewardship of this public resource, VCTF leads anti-litter initiatives, Adopt-a-Trail programs, community cleanups, and environmental education to ensure the Trail and natural habitats remain healthy, vibrant, and welcoming for generations to come.

Through programs that expand access to outdoor recreation, like the Capital Trail Outdoor Equity Fund, VCTF removes barriers for underserved communities, people with disabilities, and BIPOC populations. The ongoing 7.5-mile extension to Williamsburg strengthens the Trail as a regional connector, advancing active transportation, sustainability, community vitality, and economic growth.

The Capital Trail is a shared space where neighbors, families, and visitors connect with nature, history, and one another, fostering lasting connections and a stronger, more vibrant community.
